Hot and Cold Sample

Submerged Sample

The results from the last week are in! After fuming all 3 samples, I was able to identify at least 12 minutiae on the cold and hot samples, which is consistent with the prior weeks. In the submerged sample, however, I was not able to identify 12 minutiae. In fact, I could not even identify a print on the slide at all. So the conclusion that I have come to is that heat, at a maximum of 90 degrees Fahrenheit does not affect the visibility of a latent print after 3 weeks. Cold temperatures, at a minimum of 40 degrees Fahrenheit, do not appear to decrease the visibility in latent prints either. Latent prints that are submerged in water of at least 18 inches or more, appear to fade after only 2 weeks of being exposed to the water. Maybe this is why so many criminals expose of dirty weapons in bodies of water, it appears this may give them an increased chance of being unidentified, at least by prints.
